Removing Credit Inquiries from your report question

Posted on: 05th Sep, 2007 09:30 am
I found an ad on craigslist again. Can a company remove inquiries from a credit report or is this some type of scam?
i'm glad logan added that p.s., but he or she probably should have prefaced all the remarks with that commentary.

putting a fraud alert on your credit report isn't mere child's play - it requires a fair amount of thought beforehand.

Anyone can dispute items on their credit report for free instead of paying credit repair companies to do this for them. I suppose it might be worth having someone else do it for you if you just don't have the time and don't want to deal with it but for the most part I just don't think that many people realize that they can do this for themselves.

No direct solicitations

First let me say I'm not a credit guy but I've had my share of credit issues. I work in IT consulting and have been through 4 job losses from layoffs. As a result I eventually had to claim bankruptcy.

You absolutely can have many things removed from a credit report weather they are legitimate or not. This is done by using the Fair Credit Report Act. ANY inquiry or bankruptcy or negative credit can be disputed.

What credit repair agencies do is dispute ALL negative information even if it is legitimate. The credit agencies have a certain period of time to research and respond to every dispute. Sometimes they get lazy or just overworked and can't get to them all so they have to DELETE them.

It works wonderfully and you don't have to pay anyone to do it. You can do this yourself by getting a copy of your credit report and disputing all negative items. HOWEVER, the credit bureaus are tricky to work with.

For example if you dispute the same item month after month they may send you a letter telling you this item has already been verified and they will not investigate it any more. This is to through you off. They will and have to continue doing it by law. What usually happens is eventually they get sloppy and an item can't be verified and PRESTO its gone.

EVEN Bankruptcy. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this was DELETED on one of my three reports.

All this said there are many scams out there too so you must do your homework and find those that are good at what they do and are not making crazzy promises like a garuntee that they can remove all negative items. However, they may and usually can promise they will improve your score. This could be worth it if it takes you from a 660 to a 680 FICO.

Let me say first off that yes I am majorly against credit repair companies. If your credit needs repaired than more than likely your financial situation is not in good shape. So why pay someone else to do it for you when you can easily learn how to do it for yourself. It's kind of like spilling milk on the table and paying someone else to clean it up for you!

Besides, if you dispute an item sometimes the credit bureaus will remove the item in dispute until the dispute is resolved. Thats what a lot of credit repair companies do. Just keep disputing items in your credit with the hopes that they will be temperarily removed until they send in their next dispute. But if the item is valid there is nothing stopping it from showing back up in the near future. Thats why credit repair companies get such a bad name. There aren't many out there that don't have compaints against them with the BBB. So if you want to continually pay month after month for some company to play tricks with the credit bureaus than go right ahead. But wouldn't that money be better used to get your credit back on track thus increasing your credit score?

Back to the original Q. You can simply ask any creditors who have pulled your credit to remove it. If you applied over the phone you might tell them that you don't remember giving them permission to pull your credit. If they don't have the phone conversation recorded than they very well might just remove it. I work for a bank and I've personally seen this done many of times.

Just an idea...

Best of luck!

BOA gave me credit, and removed 4 inquires (2 personal and 2 for business credit cards) Some will and some won't but if you Google remove inquiries you will come across very cheap "free" information. Sometimes people not in the know need help from credit companies to do this, but again Google these companies to find out who has the best record. Lexington Law sucks. I have used three diferent companies, and the best method is to Google Free info and educate yourself on Blogs, as some people don't know, they just think they do, and are proud of it. Read, read, read... I bought different books, and when you compare the best people in the business, the truth will align itself with all of them. Don't believe the first thing you read like some of the comments in this blog. Yes, you can get valid negatives removed, but be prepared for for it taking 3 to 4 months, and don't try more than 5 at a time. And don't give up.
Buy a simple disputing letter packet from a reputable company, and take your time and do it yourself or get help, whichever floats your boat. It depends on the individual, and how much time they have on their hands
